You’re frying fish in the kitchen and your dog is giving you that pleading look with those irresistible puppy eyes. The question every dog owner has: can my four-legged friend actually have a piece of that delicious fried fish? The answer is yes, but there are some important caveats to consider.

Fried fish is okay, but with conditions

Dogs can certainly eat fried fish, but you need to get a few things right. Fish is actually quite healthy for your dog – full of omega-3 fatty acids that benefit their coat and joints. However, the way you prepare it makes all the difference between a healthy treat and a potentially dangerous snack.

The most important point: the fish must always be thoroughly cooked. Raw fish is a no-go for dogs as it can contain bacteria and parasites that could make your dog quite ill.

The biggest dangers of fried fish

Bones are enemy number one

I cannot emphasise this enough: double and triple-check the fish for bones. Even the tiniest bone can cause choking or, worse, damage your dog’s intestines. I’ve heard stories from owners who thought they’d removed all the bones, only to miss one.

If in doubt, it’s better to use shop-bought fish fillets – that saves a lot of fiddling and risk.

Too much fat and wrong seasonings

This is where it gets tricky. We humans love well-seasoned fish with a knob of butter, but for dogs, that’s a recipe for trouble. Too much fat can lead to stomach problems or even pancreatitis – and you really don’t want that.

More importantly: never use onion, garlic or other seasonings if you’re planning to share a piece with your dog. These ingredients are toxic to dogs and can damage their red blood cells.

How to do it properly

If you want to give your dog a piece of fried fish, keep it simple. Cook the fish in a little oil – no more than a teaspoon – without any additives. No salt, no pepper, no herbs. Just fish.

Let the fish cool properly before serving. Just as with other healthy treats – like pears – portion size matters. A few small pieces are more than enough for an average dog.

Which fish to choose

Salmon, cod and other white fish are good options because they don’t contain too much fat and are usually easy to fillet. Avoid smoked fish – it contains far too much salt for your dog.

Frozen fish is perfectly fine, as long as you thaw it thoroughly and cook it well before serving.

Watch out for allergies and special situations

Some dogs can be allergic to fish, so always start with a small piece to see how your dog reacts. Vomiting, diarrhoea or itching could be signs that fish isn’t suitable for your four-legged friend.

Do you have a dog with health issues like pancreatitis or kidney disease? Then I’d recommend consulting your vet before introducing fish. I’ve learned from experience that it’s better to check beforehand than to regret it afterwards.

Alternatives that might be better

Honestly, if you ask me, boiled or steamed fish is a better option than fried fish. You don’t use any fat at all, and the risk of stomach problems is much lower. It might be less tasty for us, but your dog will hardly notice the difference.

You can also buy special fish treats for dogs – these are specifically made to be safe and often have added vitamins.

The key points summarised

Fried fish can be a tasty treat for your dog, but you need to do it properly. Make sure the fish is completely cooked, all bones are removed, and there are no harmful seasonings. Give it in moderation – it remains a treat, not a main meal.

And remember: if you’re in doubt, leave it out. There are plenty of other healthy snacks that come with less risk. Your dog won’t love you any less for it, I promise you that.
